CLAFI Reaffirming our commitment
Last week, CJP was extremely troubled to learn that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program that shields as many as 800,000 young undocumented immigrants from deportation will end.

Earlier this year, CJP teamed up with Catholic Charities to create the CJP Legal Aid Fund for Immigrants, raising $635,000 thanks to generous donors across our community. This funding will allow Catholic Charities to greatly increase the amount of legal support they provide.

Now, those who have been protected under DACA are panicked, and our support can help Catholic Charities provide the legal advice they desperately need. We will continue to stand against discrimination and fear by helping those in need with our partners in the faith community. We hope you'll join us and give now to support this important work.

Rosh Hashana
A sweet new year for everyone

This is a special time of year. With the call of the shofar comes the call to recognize that we have the power to help people experiencing hardship, hopelessness, and fear.

After a difficult divorce, Rita, a sole provider and primary parent of two little girls, struggled to balance her career with caring for her youngest daughter, who was born with significant health issues, and making sure that her seven-year-old still got the attention she needed.

At that point, her daughters were matched with mentors who developed healthy relationships and provided ways to participate fully in their Jewish traditions.

Then, the unthinkable happened — Rita lost her job.

She turned to her Jewish community and the network of social service agencies coordinated and supported by CJP. Rita was provided with tools to network and regain confidence so she could find a new job.

“I relied on the generosity and commitment of our community to make sure my kids always had enough to eat and ways to feel connected to what it means to be Jewish,” she says.

“Every single agency and program that helped me was made possible by CJP and the generosity of their donors,” Rita remembers.

Many families like Rita’s need to feel the warmth of our caring community. Make your gift to CJP today, and, together, we can make it a sweet year for everyone.

Helene Gelber, Lauren Korn, and Elyse Marsh are starting the year off right! As Co-chairs of the Annual WP Kickoff Event, they’re planning a special evening on Monday, October 2. Learn more about how they became involved in Women’s Philanthropy, and be sure to say hello to them at the upcoming event!

Helene Gelber began her journey with CJP when she joined the staff after graduating from college. Most of us don’t remember our exact start dates, but hers nearly coincided with one of the darkest days in American history.

Lauren Korn
For Lauren Korn, it was her grandparents who inspired her to get involved in the Jewish community.

Elyse Marsh

Throughout the years, Elyse Marsh attended many CJP events and programs, mostly through invitations from her friends. But, it was her participation on the 2013 Women’s Philanthropy Mission to Israel that truly solidified her own personal connection.
